Separate the blockage from the pipe condition
A root-related blockage and a defect in the drain are connected questions, but clearing the obstruction does not describe the condition of every section. Start with our blocked drains guide if you are still identifying which part of the system is affected.
Tell us whether roots were actually identified during previous work or are only suspected because trees are nearby. A tree beside the house is not enough on its own to identify the cause of a slow drain.
Build a history of the problem
- When was the drain last cleared?
- Were roots reported, photographed or seen during a camera inspection?
- How long did normal drainage continue afterwards?
- Is the same fixture or outside drain affected each time?
- Has any section been repaired, replaced or lined?
Keep reports and the location of previous work together. That history helps a new investigation focus on the recurring problem rather than starting from an assumption.
Use inspection to inform the decision
Our CCTV and pipeline robotic cameras examine the inside of the drain. GPS location can support identifying where the findings sit on the property. Ask us to explain which section is affected and what the condition means for the available work.
If a drain has blocked repeatedly after clearing, the recurring blockage checklist helps you organise the timeline and questions to bring to the discussion.
Compare clearing and repair
Clearing tackles the obstruction. A repair decision considers the pipe condition, the affected length, connections and access. Replacement or structural lining may be discussed after investigation, with the suitability of each option considered for that particular line.
Use our relining and replacement comparison to ask about preparation, access and reinstatement. Avoid choosing solely on how little surface work appears to be involved.
Protect the area while arranging help
Leave digging and work on buried pipes to the drainage team. Record visible symptoms from a safe, accessible position and keep clear of wastewater. If trees or landscaping affect access, include photographs of the area with your enquiry.
We can discuss both the drainage work and the reinstatement needed around concrete, pavers or gardens.
Ask about roots in your drain
Tell us what earlier clearing or camera work found so we can discuss the next investigation.
