Gurgling Drains: What the Sounds Can Tell You

Listen for the pattern

Record whether the sound happens while that fixture drains or when water is used somewhere else. Note whether drainage is slow and whether more than one fixture is affected. Our blocked drains guide helps you describe the wider picture.

Do not keep running water simply to reproduce the sound if water is already backing up. A sound on its own cannot identify the exact fault in a hidden drain.

Use a short observation checklist

• Which sink, shower, toilet or outside drain is involved?
• Does the noise occur during use or afterwards?
• Are water levels rising or taking longer to settle?
• Is there a smell or outside overflow at the same time?
• Did the problem begin after rain or after earlier drainage work?

A brief note is often enough. Share what you observed directly and keep possible explanations separate.

One fixture or several?

The number and location of affected fixtures helps describe the extent of the concern. Tell us if an upstairs fixture, downstairs fixture and outside drain all change together, or whether everything else appears normal.
